ISLAY SEASONWATCH: AUTUMN

Late summer harvest fields leave a patchwork of stubble and rootcrop fields which await the mass arrival of the greenland whitefront and barnacle geese at the Autumn Equinox. Equinox brings high tides and storms. Red deer rut commences at the first frosts with primeval roaring from the hills. Autumn fruits are born in the woodlands and roadside scrub. Brightly coloured fungi emerge on the machair grassland.  Misty mornings bring autumn colours. Graceful whooper swans are arriving at their winter home. Rafts of sea ducks build on the sea lochs.
