ISLAY SEASONWATCH: SUMMER
Swallows have arrived. Elusive corncrakes secretly nest in the flag iris beds. Cotton grass beds shimmer in the sun. Woodlands echo with the cuckoos call. Thyme carpets the dunes. Breeding season peaks by Summer Solstice. Secretive roe rut in woods and fields. Golden eagles and hen harriers hunting for food on the heathland and dunes in the long summer evenings. Otters feeding on the high tide line. Late summer brings the purple heathery hills.
